Rossing heeds nuclear future call

By Jeremiah Ndjoze
Rossing Uranium has become one of the first local entities to respond to President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s call for corporate Namibia to drive the country’s energy vision, centred on human capital development by ‘investing in the people and equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to lead in a dynamic global sector.’
While speaking at a recent energy conference earlier this year, the
Nandi-Ndaitwah did not mince her words when she stressed that her administration is strengthening partnerships between government, academia, and industry to ensure that the country’s education and training systems respond to the needs of a modern energy economy - but that ‘the government cannot do it alone.’
Last week, Rossing Uranium heeded this call and awarded three students the opportunity to pursue their master’s degrees in Nuclear Energy, in China, under the prestigious Atomic Energy Scholarship Program.
The students Henock Hakaala, Ernos Nashidengo, and Beath Amoomo have been accepted into Harbin Engineering University (HEU) and are scheduled to depart for China on 28 August 2025, with all costs relating to their studies covered by Rössing through its majority shareholder CNUC.
Addressing the occasion Rössing Uranium general manager for Human Capital, Safety & Sustainability, Liezl Davies, reiterated that the initiative, by her company, is a direct response to the call made by President Nandi-Ndaitwah during her visit to the mine, earlier this year, where she urged the nation to cultivate skills and prepare for a future powered by nuclear energy.
“Today, we stand as the first company to publicly respond to that call. We are not only mining uranium; we are investing in the human capital that will one day power Namibia’s nuclear future,” Davies said.
“We are proud to announce that Rössing has made arrangements with its parent company, CNUC that these bursars will further benefit from structured graduate development programs and job attachments at China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) nuclear plants, giving them hands-on experience in operating world-class facilities.
Davies she added further maintaining that this is not only an investment in the scholarship recipients’ futures but a deliberate step in building the technical expertise Namibia needs to achieve
Nandi-Ndaitwah’s vision.
“You carry not only the hopes of your families but also the aspirations of a nation. You will wear Namibia’s colours abroad, representing the potential of this great country. Your success will inspire thousands more to believe in what is possible,” she stressed.
The mine shares the sentiments that from classroom to nuclear facilities, the beneficiaries will be immersed in the technologies and practices of the future, and upon their return, they will bring back not just degrees, but the skills and confidence to contribute to Namibia’s economy. In the long run, they will join a broader talent pipeline that includes internships, job attachments, bursary schemes, and graduate development programs ensuring Namibia has the right skills at the right time.
Rössing Uranium also announced the selection of four exceptional learners who will participate in the Gen Z Youth Exchange Program. The selected students are Elrechia Subes (Grade 9, West Side High School), Berlize Fuls (Grade 9, Pro-Ed Academy), Benjamin Jacobus (Grade 7, Oshakati Private School), and Jeremia Nekongo (Grade 8, Oshakati Private School). These learners, all children of Rössing Uranium employees, were chosen based on their outstanding academic performance.
According to the mine, they will join six other students from across the country on a 10-day educational excursion to China, departing on 20 September 2025, in a program aimed at exposing them to cutting-edge scientific and technological advancements.
Witnessing the occasion Erongo Region governor Nathalia /Goagoses called on the beneficiaries to make the best of the opportunities awarded to them.
“I urge you to use this opportunity to get the country ready when the time comes. Expose yourself and when you are done, come back home and take charge of this new evolution. As a country and as the regional leadership, we are behind you and we are comforted that Rössing has availed this opportunity to empower our future leaders,” said /Goagoses.
