Venaani warns against tribalism

PDM President McHenry Venaani

Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) leader and lawmaker, McHenry Venaani, has cautioned that tribalism remains a serious threat to Namibia’s unity, social harmony, and equitable development, despite the progress made since independence.
Speaking in the National Assembly on Tuesday, Venaani said although Namibia has made commendable strides in fostering national cohesion, lingering tribal sentiments continue to undermine the country’s democratic foundations.
He announced that he will table a motion in Parliament on Wednesday, 17 September 2025, calling for a national debate on tribalism.
“I hereby give notice that I will move a motion in this August House to debate the grave matter of tribalism in Namibia, with the view to consider urgent and practical measures to address and remedy this challenge in the interest of national unity and cohesion,” Venaani said.
The proposed motion, he added, will also consider international approaches such as quota-based systems that promote equitable access to national resources.
He urged lawmakers to approach the debate “with respect and sensitivity.”
Venaani further suggested that the motion be referred to the relevant Parliamentary standing committee for a detailed inquiry and recommendations.
At the same time, Venaani stressed that tribalism remains rooted in Namibia’s history of colonialism and apartheid, which deliberately divided communities and entrenched unequal development.
“To this day, its manifestations are evident in political allegiances, perceptions of preferential access to resources, and disputes over traditional authority, all of which undermine the spirit of unity enshrined in our supreme law,” he noted.
He reminded fellow lawmakers that the Constitution obliges them to confront tribalism.
Venaani also cited several provisions, including Article 8, which upholds the dignity of all Namibians; Article 10, which guarantees equality before the law; Article 23, which condemns division and discrimination; and Article 95, which directs the State to promote the welfare of the people through policies advancing unity, justice, and social equity.
