A group of young Village footballers below 15 years came together and organised a football tournament at Onuugonya village in Oshikoto Region, battling out for a N$70 cash prize.
The tournament held a fortnight ago, brought together three village teams, Onuugonya, Ehafo and Andjamba Mbali at Onuugonya playground.
The host team Onuugonya maintained home ground advantage beating Ehafo 6-1, before playing out to a 1-all draw against Andjamba Mbali, with Onuugonya winning 6-5 in a penalty shootout. Ehafo who suffered in their first match 6-1, were given a second chance to play again against the host (Onuugonya), once again they lost 4-0.
Onuugonya was crowned champions, pocketing the whole N$70 dollar that was on the table.
Paulus Mwashindange, who featured for Onuugonya said community back up in the area is very low when it comes to supporting the youth and is hoping to see community members in the future to assist them in setting up a bigger tournament that will have more teams and players.
''One community business person met us and promised to allocated better amount for the tournament , as we are planning to host one during festive season,” said Mwashindange.
Tomas Hafeni, who played for Ehafo has said that he is hoping to see the councilor from the area promoting such initiative like the one that just hosted.
“We are the future and hopefully our councillor is looking into this by helping us in any ways. We just want to keep ourselves busy than being out there doing evil things,” said Hafeni.
Another player from Ehafo, Tangi Robert said training equipments is a major problem facing their community team.
“During game events only few shebeen owners offered little help and this became difficult for their team to cope," said Robert.
