The fourth edition of the Swakopmund Fashion Week (SFW) is set to take place during the opening week of September at the Platz Am Meer mall at the coastal town.
Speaking to Confidente during an interview with week, the founder of the event, Christ Laolange Shameulu said that the Swakopmund Fashion Week is a celebration of Namibia’s rich cultural diversity and creative talent.
“The Swakopmund Fashion Week is more than a fashion event. It is a movement for empowerment, creativity, and cultural pride.”
“We showcase designs inspired by local traditions, landscapes, and heritage while incorporating modern trends.”
“This blend of cultural storytelling and contemporary fashion gives both local and international audiences an authentic taste of Namibian identity positioning our country as a hub for originality, craftsmanship, and sustainable fashion,” she said.
Taking place from 1 to 7 September, the Swakopmund Fashion Week has also drawn designers from countries like South Africa and Botswana.
According to Shameulu, the international attention the event has gained shows how it has contributed to the quality of the Namibian fashion industry.
“By hosting designers from other African countries and beyond, SFW creates a platform for cultural exchange and cross-border collaboration.”
“International participation not only exposes Namibian designers to new trends, techniques, and markets but also attracts media coverage and buyers from outside our borders boosting our industry’s visibility and growth potential,” said Shameulu.
The organiser further said that the event has grown and will feature new segments for fashion enthusiasts.
“Alongside breathtaking runway shows, the programme features live performances from top Namibian artists, livestreaming audiences platform, a Fashion Business Seminar, pop-up exhibitions, networking sessions, and a Young Designers Showcase, where guests can expect an immersive cultural experience that goes beyond fashion.”
“This year, we’re raising the bar with a stronger focus on sustainability, mentorship, and market access.”
“Our goal is not just to put on a show but to create long-term opportunities for designers, models, and other creatives,” she explained.
With Swakopmund’s unique coastal charm aligning the Swakopmund Fashion Week brand, Shemeulu said that it will offer both locals and visitors a blend of high fashion and Namibian tourism appeal.
“This year’s venue has been carefully chosen for its accessibility, modern facilities, and aesthetic appeal, allowing for a world-class runway experience,” said Shameulu.
She urged the government and the public sector to invest in the fashion industry to eliminate challenges the industry faces.
“The Namibian fashion industry can grow by investing in skills development, strengthening supply chains, and improving access to both local and international markets.
“Key challenges such as limited funding, lack of manufacturing infrastructure, and insufficient industry regulation can be addressed through public-private partnerships, fashion incubators, and targeted government support for creative industries.”
She concluded by calling on stakeholders to attend and experience a platform that will to entertain, nurtures talent, drives economic growth, and tell Namibia’s story to the world.
