100 000 illegal arms handed to police

CLOSE to 100 000 illegal arms, ammunition and armaments were handed over to the Namibian police countrywide and have since been destroyed.

This was initiated in 2016 when Namibia launched her first amnesty and the public was requested to surrender illegal arms in their possession without being prosecuted.

According to statistics provided to Confidente by Inspector General Sebastian Ndeitunga 1 276 firearms, 99 509 ammunition and 81 unexploded ordnances were handed over to the police and were destroyed.

The statistics also show 453 cases of attempted murder with a firearm were recorded from 2018 to 2021, while 919 cases of pointing of firearm and theft of firearms were recorded during the same period.
