Handura an unsung hero

… as he leads two different teams to two Hockey World Cups

ERWIN Handura made history when he became the first local coach to lead two national teams to two different World Cups when the national woman senior hockey 5s team qualified for the 2024 Hockey World Cup.

Handura qualified with the women’s Indoor Hockey team for the rescheduled 2023 International Hockey Federation (FIH) Indoor tournament to be held from Feruary 5-11 in Pretoria, South Africa.

He then led the 5s team to the first ever Hockey 5s World Cup to be held in Muscat, Oman in January 2024.

The national senior indoor hockey team qualified for this year’s World Cup after winning the Africa Cup in South Africa where the defeated the hosts 2-0 in the final, while the hockey women 5s team claimed gold at the African hockey 5s tournament that was held in Ismailia, Egypt from December 10-15 last year.

At the Indoor world cup, Namibia and host South Africa will be the only African representatives, while at the Hockey 5s women World Cup, Namibia will be joined by South Africa and Zambia.
