Namibia reaches Covid vaccination milestone

NAMIBIA reached its global goal to vaccinating the most vulnerable 10 percent of the population against Covid-19 by the end of September.

Namibia has to date vaccinated 13.1 percent of its population, executive director in the Ministry of Health and Social Services Ben Nangombe revealed to Confidente.

The global goal target of vaccinating 10 percent of the populations of all countries against Covid-19 was set and adopted at the 74th World Health Assembly, the world’s highest health policy-setting body that was hosted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) from May 24 to 31 2021.

Almost 90 percent of high income-countries have met this target.

Health minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula had said: “Our target is to vaccinate over 600 000 of our population by the end of September 2021.”

However according to the health ministry’s daily update, as of October 5 2021 Namibia has administered 276 431 (18.4 percent) people with the first dose only and 195 973 (13 percent) have been fully vaccinated with the second dose of the available Sinopharm, AstraZeneca, Sputnik and Pfizer vaccines.
