Age was never a criteria, says Gawanas

BY TRACY TAFIRENYIKA

WHEN a man occpies a position of authority no one questions his integrity. Because it is a man, he is automatically entitled to a leadership role but when it comes to a woman there are many things that are going to be played out there and this time it is the age card,” former Ombudswoman and Swapo politician Bience Gawanas has said.

The former Special Adviser on Africa for the United Nations was sharing her views on the raging debate for the Swapo Party Vice Presidential contest in an exclusive interview with Confidente this week.

This comes after people campaigning for Deputy Prime Minister Netumbo Nandi- Ndaitwah’s rivals, Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa- Amadhila and Environment, Forestry and Tourism Minister, Pohamba Shifeta
said Nandi-Ndaitwah was old to be the next President.

Incumbent President Hage Geingob was 74 years when he took over the reigns from former President Hifikepunye Pohamba who eased Geingob’s way through the succession race.

Pohamba was 70 years old when he became the Vice President of the Party before he succeeded founding President Sam Nujoma who became president at the age 61.

The Deputy Prime Minister, who is also the Vice President of the Party Netumbo Nandi- Ndaitwah is currently 69 and is vying to retain her position as Vice President and is viewed to be corrupt-free.

Nandi-Ndaitwah is up against two 54-year-olds, Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, and Shifeta.

Gawanas went on to state that whenever the issue of women is raised in parliament or gender issues it is always a debate. When Swapo adopted the Zebra rule, everyone was saying that women will be wheelbarrowed.

If the playing field is levelled, then we should not be talking about whether we should have affirmative action for women or whether Namibia is ready for a female president.

“There are other issues that will be discussed normally but when it comes to women, it’s a different conversation. If the playing field is equal then there shouldn’t be talks about affirmative action for women whether Namibia is ready for a female President or not.

The question is not whether or not Namibia is ready for a female President because everyone according to our constitution has the right to elect and to be elected in whatever position. I also want to believe when we fought for independence of the country we fought for equal opportunities and recognition of everyone’s work in Namibia, so that notion should not arise especially after 32 years of independence. Now the reality that one must rather consider is that we live in a patriarchal society,” she stated.

She furthermore asked if women are less worthy in our country that they cannot be leaders or to be in position of authority.

“The question of whether Namibia is ready for a female President is a question we should not be asking especially after 32 years of independence. Are women less worthy in our country that they cannot be leaders or in position of authority. I am not saying young people cannot lead I’m worried about this whole issue of youth versus the aged. I think the focus should be on what kind of qualities a leader should have in order to be a good leader. That should be what should occupy our minds. It should not matter if it’s a woman or a black person, a brown person, Damara, Herero.
