The Brave Warriors advanced to the round of 16 after finishing as one of the third best-placed teams in a group, securing a spot in the knockout stage for the first time after four attempts at the AFCON since their debut at the 1998 AFCON in Burkina Faso, where they only collected a point in a 3-all draw against Angola. The Brave Warriors also participated in the 2008 AFCON in Ghana but could only salvage a draw against Guinea in a 1-all tie. Current Brave Warriors coach Collin Benjamin captained the side.
