Celebrating a decade of existence …Welwitchia Health Training Centre expanding to become fully fledged university

A decade ago, our founders embarked on a journey that was driven by a commitment to excellence and a vision for the future. Welwitchia Health Training Centre (WHTC) was established ten years ago by two fierce visionaries hailing all the way from Omusati Region Mrs Monika Pendukeni and Prof Scholastika Iipinge, just like Martin Luther King, the partners had a dream of owning a fully-fletched university. The seed of this dream was planted in a modest office in Northern Industrial Park WHTC opened with the first cohort of only 78 students. The intention of the founders was to empower young people and those unable to continue their education elsewhere accompanied by a vision to establish a centre of excellence, which will complement the government institutions in bridging the gap experienced in higher education. Founder and Chairperson of the Council, Mrs Monika Pendukeni said “We set out to create a place of learning that would not only provide a high-quality education but also foster innovation, inclusivity, and a sense of community. Over the past ten years, we have worked tirelessly to turn that vision into a reality.” As small as the institution was in the early stages, the founders always had a question on their minds – “How did the public become aware of the institution? The increased student enrolment was due to word of mouth and the public’s trust in the founders.

The institution has since expanded over the years with close to 6000 students on its books, with nine campuses located in seven of the fourteen regions. One of the most significant achievements of the past decade has been our institution’s commitment to academic excellence. We have invested in world-class faculty and innovative programmes.

Our students have thrived in this environment, going on to achieve great success in their careers and making a positive impact on society.

The teaching approaches used at WHTC are application-based, which has so far effectively empowered the youth. The graduates are extraordinarily well prepared, as those working with them have acknowledged industry experience. “We brought nursing education to the people and continue striving for at least one centre in each region. The people can attest to what we have accomplished in the last ten years.

We train not only Namibians but students from all over Africa because we believe that if we positively impact Namibia, the effect would spread to other countries.”
