City writes off N$400 million

THE City of Windhoek has written off residents’ debt worth N$400 million in the past five years. This was revealed to Confidente by Harold Akwenye, City of Windhoek spokesperson who also revealed that Windhoek residents still owe the municipality N$1 billion in unpaid bills and there has not been a final decision on payment amnesty for pensioners.
Last year the city council announced that it handed over ratepayers in Windhoek, who owe the municipality about N$235 million to the council’s lawyers for collection.
Of that amount, Akwenye said over N0 million has been recovered to date.
