By Michael Uugwanga

Tourism Minister Pohamba Shifeta says 289 rhinos have been poached in Namibia between 2019 and this year. Shifeta made the remarks during the World Rhino Day commemoration at Okaukuejo Etosha National Park, during which the ministry launched the Black and White Rhino Management initiative in collaboration with various stakeholders.

The ministry also inaugurated a horse unit for wildlife protection and law enforcement. The initiative aims to reduce the ever-increasing illegal rhino poaching and other endangered species in Etosha and nearby areas after the government and other stakeholders raised concerns about unlawful poaching in protected areas. The Tourism Ministry bought 13 horses, with funding from the Game Product Trust Fund, to tighten security against illicit poaching.
