Diminishing Govt funding impeding Unam’s strategic projects

STAFF at the University of Namibia (UNAM) face the disheartening prospect of continued salary stagnation for the fifth consecutive year, as dwindling subsidies from the government have cast a shadow over the institution’s financial prospects.
In his recent State of the University address this week, Professor Kenneth Matengu, the Vice Chancellor of UNAM, shared the sobering reality that the university’s inability to increase salaries is a direct consequence of diminishing government support.

UNAM has been grappling with financial constraints that have far-reaching implications for staff, students, and the institution.
The university’s ambitions to execute strategic projects and introduce new academic programmes have been hampered by the ongoing reduction in government subsidies, making it increasingly challenging to maintain competitive compensation packages for staff.
Matengu lamented the significant repercussions of the university’s budgetary shortfall.

He said strategic projects and the introduction of newly approved academic programmes had to be put on hold because of low subsidies from the government.
