• By Michael Uugwanga

AT the age of 12, Israel Dowie already appears to be Namibia’s next big sports star after winning the Under-16 Mini 5 tennis tournament in Cape Town, where he defeated second-seeded Devilliers Lamprecht (ranked 10th in South Africa) 6-1,6-0 in the semi-final and Levi Marks 6-3,6-4 in the final.

Dowie, born in Namibia in 2010, is based in Cape Town, South Africa, where he is homeschooling and playing full-time tennis at one of the world’s most outstanding tennis academies, the Anthony Harris Tennis Academy.

His father, Duane Dowie, is well-known to those who have followed local tennis for many years, having represented the country in various tournaments, including the African Championships and other junior tennis competitions.

A delighted Israel, who competed against an older age group, told Confidente his father saw his skill as a toddler.
