MOTOR spinning comes with high risk; however this will not stop the sport from growing in the country, following announcement by Driver Red Auto-Sports (DRA) Motor Club that it will be holding a spinning competition in Rundu, in the Kavango-East Region on 17 December.
This was announced by DRA’s vice-chairman and head of organiser for all events, Ferdi Coetzee in an interview with Confidente this week.
Coetzee said the aim of taking the sport to the river town was to create awareness of the sport and the danger spinning comes with, especially to those drivers that tend to risk when speeding cars unnecessary.
About the sport of spinning
Spinning is an international motorsport that involves driving cars at speed in circles and performing stunts in and out of the car.
Spinning originated in Soweto in the late 1980s, and was performed as a funeral ritual in which a stolen car was spun around to honor the deceased and it is now a recognised motorsport, not only in South Africa but in Namibia as well.

In South Africa, spinners makes a living out of the sport despite the danger the sport comes with, however in Namibia the sport still has a long way in attracting potential sponsors due to the scarcity of resources.
DRA is a member of the Namibia Motor Sport Federation, which is affiliated to the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC).
DRA hosted the fourth leg of Spinning Champions at Jan Mohr Secondary School in Windhoek a fortnight ago at the school’s parking area, which was contested by spinners from Namibia, South Africa, Botswana and Zambia.
“Last month the club hosted a national spinning competition which was the fifth leg of the sixth leg. The spinners were competing for points ahead of the final of the national spinning championship in December at the venue yet to be confirmed.

The competition was attended by more than 600 people. There was no sponsor for it because we are still searching for sponsors. We are now planning to take the sport to Rundu because we want to decentralize the sport. Our aim to take spinning to Rundu is to create safety awareness campaign on spinning.
It will be on 17 December,” Coetzee said.
