Elephants kill farmer in Omusati
By Marx Itamalo
A farmer in the Okatseidhi area of Tsandi constituency in Omusati region was killed on Saturday night after a herd of elephants invaded his mahangu field. According to the Omusati police, about 12 elephants descended on the village at about 17h00 that day. As usual, neighbours started calling and warning one another about the presence of the pachyderms in their village.
Abner Iyambo Petrus and others were allegedly at nearby cuca shops and upon hearing the news, decided to go and chase the elephants out of their fields. The police said Petrus’ wife, daughter and some neighbours saw two elephants in the field and decided chasing them away by shouting and beating drums as normal practice with people living in areas where elephants are not uncommon. Totally oblivious to the presence of much of the herd in nearby bushes behind them, the community started chasing away the two visible animals and it is when one of the elephants in the bush pounced on them.
