Empowering the “She-Economy” with FNB: H.E.R. Banking

In March, Namibia proudly marked a historic milestone with the inauguration of its first female president, Her Excellency Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah (NNN), highlighting the evolving recognition of women’s leadership capabilities on par with their male counterparts. In celebrating and appreciating women’s inclusivity, FNB Namibia took the initiative to launch its first-ever women-focused solution, H.E.R Banking, an initiative marking a significant milestone in the bank’s ongoing commitment to financial inclusion. At the forefront of this transformative movement is Sepo Haihambo, the CEO of FNB Namibia Commercial Banking, whose leadership and vision has been instrumental in driving financial empowerment for women. Known for her significant positions in the financial sector as former Head of Global Markets CIB at Rand Merchant Bank, and Senior Client Coverage Manager for International Development Groups at Standard Bank Group, Haihambo is not just a leader in finance but a catalyst for change. She has dedicated her career into breaking barriers and ensuring financial inclusivity particularly for women entrepreneurs. Her approach is clear: to innovate with purpose and create opportunities that uplift communities. Responding on how she balances driving innovation with ensuring inclusivity and empowerment in the financial sector as a leader, she responded. “Innovation happens when you know the needs of people and work towards solving these needs,” As she explained understanding market dynamics and the challenges faced by underrepresented groups is key to building sustainable financial solutions. Her leadership style is not just about strategy and execution; it’s about fostering an ecosystem where business success is intertwined with community growth. H.E.R Banking, launched in Women’s Month, a response to the unique challenges faced by women entrepreneurs, was driven by observations within the market. “In light of the challenges faced by women in business, we felt compelled to facilitate specialised services that directly cater to their needs,” she said. Haihambo shared that she is hopeful that H.E.R Banking will be able to drive financial inclusion and service a largely underserved market within the country as it aims to offer tailored financial solutions that not only provide access to finance but also empower women with the tools, support, and networks they need to thrive in business. “We know that by being a partner in women’s financial success, we contribute to a stronger, more inclusive economy,” she said. Adding, “At FNB Namibia we have always been a proud supporter of entrepreneurs, and we are delighted to extend our support to women entrepreneurs addressing their specific needs.” More than just a banking solution, H.E.R Banking is a movement towards financial independence for women. It provides not only access to tailored financial products but also mentorship, networking opportunities, and a dedicated women’s support hub. “Women don’t just need capital; they need guidance, networks, and a sense of belonging in the financial space,” Haihambo asserted. Through mentorship programmes and business forums, H.E.R Banking offers women access to expertise that helps them scale their businesses. The initiative also hosts curated networking events, where women entrepreneurs can learn from industry leaders and peers. The success of H.E.R Banking will be measured by the number of women who grow and sustain their businesses with its support. “We are building a growing community of financially empowered women entrepreneurs,” she says. By narrowing the gender gap in business ownership and fostering economic participation, the initiative aims to redefine the role of women-led businesses in the national economy. Her vision goes beyond just financial services, it’s about creating an inclusive financial landscape where women have the tools, knowledge, and confidence to thrive. As a leader she encourages women striving to and aiming to succeed in life “You need to back yourself, understand yourself, be true to your values, and make decisions that align with them,” she advised. Popular singer & business woman Rihanna once said, “There’s something so special about a woman who dominates in a man’s world. It takes a certain grace, strength, intelligence, fearlessness, and the nerve to never take NO for an answer.” With determination persuasiveness, resilience, courage & grit, women continue to boldly prove that every woman deserves a seat at any table without her worth being questioned. And through H.E.R Banking and her unwavering commitment to inclusivity, Sepo Haihambo is not just shaping a better future for women in business, she is ensuring that they have a seat at the table, today and always.
