Erongo holds boxing course

By Michael Uugwanga

THE Erongo Boxing Federation (EBF) recently hosted a referees and judges course with the aim of boosting the sport of boxing in the region.

This was announced by Selma Shikukumwa, the chairperson of Erongo Boxing Federation who also said that the participants were awarded with certificates.

“The aim is to create more qualified referees and judges for our region and it was good to see our young ones especially women willing to take part in boxing. We got the blessing from the Namibia Boxing Federation to hold such a course.

Now we are planning to host an international course and we might take from these people (participants) depending on their commitment.

We want to train more referees and judges, because the more we have a bigger team of qualified referees and judges, the more we will see more kids keeping themselves busy with boxing than being on the street,” said Shikukumwa.

She also said that they want to make Erongo the home of boxing even though the region has seen many of its promising boxers leaving the region for greener pastures notably for well-funded boxing stables in Windhoek.

“We want to put our name on the map again and that is by producing the best boxers in the country, just like we have been doing so in the past years, but to achieve this we just need the blessings from the parents and the community because our coaches are ready to train the young kids to become top boxers,” said Shikukumwa.

Erongo region is home to some of the country’s finest boxers including legendary and former World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Middleweight World Champion, Harry ‘Terminator’ Simon, former International Boxing Federation (IBF) Continental Africa Lightweight title and IBF Youth Featherweight title holder, Albinus Danny-Boy Felesianu, Olympian and 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medalist Jonas Junius Jonas and promising boxer Harry Simon Jr, just a few to mention.

The course was held at the Walvis Bay Boxing Academy and was attended by 20 participants, namely André Borchert, Karen West, Chris-Louis de Klerk, Johannes Grobler, Angelique Muller, Bernard Tjaverua, Monique Damon, Philip Müller, Delano Müller, Lesley !Hoaëb, Zane Mouton, Ryan Slinger, Naomi Erasmus, Saalty Salatiel, Hirukevi Muhipa, Tobias Benjamin, Theo Johannes, Jose Kambinda, Vaino Shainingo and Johannes Matheus.
