SLATED for October 21 at Omaruru, the annual Erongo Powersave Challenge running endurance race was launched in Windhoek on Tuesday.

The event, co-sponsored by First National Bank (FNB), Coca-Cola Bottling Company Namibia, Omaruru Municipality, and Namib Mills, is expected to attract the country’s top athletes, particularly from the Namibia Defence Force (NDF), Namibia Correctional Services (NCS), and Namibia Police Force (NamPol).

There will be prize money in each category, with main event winners in both male and female categories set to receive N$ 7,000.

Event director Bethold Karumendu said the race has grown tremendously, having begun with 430 attendees and now drawing up to 1,000 participants.

“We began with a sponsorship of N$30 000 and have now raised N$100 000 in total sponsorship. We are also expecting participants from Botswana’s Orapa Athletics Club. Elite athletes from the NDF, NamPol, and other organisations are expected to compete in the event. Other categories include youths and veterans aged 49 and upwards. Registration will open on October 20. This year, the race comes as we celebrate our 10th anniversary,” Karumendu said.
