FNB rules out co-sponsoring NPFL for now

FOLLOWING media reports that the domestic football season is to start on November 05, former football co-sponsor First National Bank (FNB) Namibia has made it clear they will not be part of the competition sponsors of the Namibia Premier Football League (NPFL).

FNB and Telecommunication giants, MTC were co-sponsors to then Namibia Premier League (NPL), now known as NPFL, following the expulsion of the NPL for allegedly bringing football into a disruption after the 2018/2019 soccer season, the last time the country had a fully fledge football league.

In 2017, FNB and MTC signed a three-year joint sponsorship amounting to N$20 million towards the top tier league, with MTC giving N$15 million per season while FNB committed a N$5 million per season before the contract ended premature due to infighting within football fraternity.

Nearly three weeks ago it was reported that Debamrine Namibia will become the total sponsor for all football leagues, these includes, NFPL, first division, second division and women football.

It is against this background that FNB has stated clear that they will not be a

co-sponsor of the NFPL, despite not ruling out a future sponsorship towards football once opportunity arises.

“As reported in the media over the past few week, the Namibia Football Association (NFA) managed to secure a sponsorship for its Premier League, we at FNB are excited to hear that football will finally kick-off, however, I can confirm that we are not part of the sponsors towards the new NPFL,” Gordon Pokolo, FNB Namibia Sponsorship and Promotion Manager told Confidente.

Pokolo however said that the bank will continue to monitor football situation after saying that they had previously engaged NFA’s Normalisation Committee (NC) regarding football related funding opportunities.
