The health ministry has expanded and modernized health facilities to provide better service access.

Speaking at the Cabinet Committee Briefing, health Minister Kalumbi Shangula said that over the 2023/24 FY, the ministry has been undertaking construction, upgrading, and renovation projects of hospitals and other health facilities, including abandoned projects, Intensive Care Units, dialysis units, and medical oxygen upgrades.

‘’Before Covid-19, Intensive Care Unit beds were limited in Windhoek Central Hospital, Katutura Intermediate, Oshakati and Onandjokwe Intermediate Hospitals, with 35 ICU beds’’ says Shangula.

Shangula further said that referrals to hospitals should be limited to far away. For patients’ convenience, the ministry has embarked on a project to construct intensive care units at various hospitals. Shangula further revealed that the ministry has advertised bids for constructing intensive care units at Windhoek Central Hospital Pediatric Unit, Mariental District Hospital, Gobabis District and Rundu Intermediate Hospitals.
