I did not appoint myself – Ya Ndakolo

By Eliaser Ndeyanale

NEWLY appointed Oshikoto Governor Penda ya Ndakolo has told those that are unhappy with his reappointment as regional governor to respect President Hage Geingob’s decision, as he (ya Ndakolo) did not appoint himself.

Ya Ndakolo was appointed Oshikoto regional governor at the beginning of April but there have been muted criticisms in the region that he should not have been brought back, because he had reportedly failed to bring much-needed development when he served as governor for that region for more than 14 years before his appointment as minister of defence in 2015.

Ya Ndakolo succeeded Henock Kankoshi, who served for only one term.

Speaking to Confidente recently, Ya Ndakolo said people should be cognisant of the fact that the President is the appointing authority and should respect Geingob’s decision to appoint him to the post. “They should know that the power to appoint a minister or governor is vested in the President. I didn’t bring myself here. I have been sent by President Geingob to serve.

“They should leave [that to] the appointing authority, it is his prerogative and he had widely consulted the leadership of Oshikoto to appoint someone who is fit for the position. When I returned I received hundreds of calls and text messages congratulating me for having returned to Oshikoto, some of the messages I have not even read yet.

“People are overwhelmed that I am back to Oshikoto.

What is encouraging is that most of those that are congratulating me are young people.

I am happy that I am back to the region and I have been welcomed by the traditional authority and councillors,” he said.

Interestingly, Ya Ndakolo’s predecessor did not attend his welcoming party where he was also supposed to hand over the keys to the governor’s office. He had instead sent another official to deliver the keys.

All indications are that there is bad blood between Ya Ndakolo and Kankoshi.

Confidente sought to obtain comment from Kankoshi as to why he did not personally hand over the keys, but he did not respond to questions sent to him, as per his request.

Three weeks ago, Kankoshi told Confidente that he was not aware that he had been removed from his position as regional governor. Ya Ndakolo served as defence minister from 21 March 2015 until 20 March this year before being re-appointed to his new post.
