CoW receives vehicle charging stations from Tesla

Chief Executive Officer of Tesla, Elon Musk

South African born billionaire and owner of Tesla has donated and electric vehicle (EV) charging station to the City of Windhoek valued at about N$120, 000.
The charging station will be installed at the City of Windhoek’s offices, making it publicly accessible for monitoring usage trends, the City of Windhoek has announced.
“ This installation will also contribute to ongoing research on the integration of electric vehicles into Namibia’s transport system,” it said in a statement this week.
The donation was made through its Namibian trading arm, Tesla Energy Solutions, specializing in sustainable energy technologies.
“Tesla Energy Solutions’ donation comes at a significant time as the City of Windhoek continues to lead the charge in implementing climate change mitigation strategies and adaptation actions. This donation not only supports the City’s transition towards more sustainable energy sources but also aligns with its commitment to advancing climate resilience and promoting green technologies within the urban environment. The City of Windhoek views this contribution as an important step in its efforts to create a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future,” the statement further read.
In another development, the City of Windhoek will start public consultations on the Windhoek Urban Structure Plan (WUSP) to help guide urban planning and growth over the next 20 years. “Its goal is to provide comprehensive strategic direction for land use, urban development, and infrastructure planning across Windhoek’s entire jurisdiction,” the CoW said.
It said “the primary purpose of the WUSP is to establish a strong framework for managing urban growth and land development, including key considerations for infrastructure, such as the transportation network.”
“The plan prioritizes sustainable and inclusive mobility, integrating provisions for non-motorized transport to ensure that urban planning caters to the needs of all residents. This document will play a pivotal role in steering Windhoek’s future development, facilitating growth that is environmentally sustainable, economically viable, and socially inclusive,” it said.
The City of Windhoek has also decided to donate its redundant vehicles Berseba Village Council, Gibeon Village Council, Okakarara Town Council, Rundu Town Council, Eenhana Town Council, and Khorixas Town Council.
Among the donated items are skip trucks, refuse removal loaders, compactor trucks, portable steel flat tanks, compressors, and pick-up bakkies.
