FINALLY, the much awaited match in the country’s top women’s football flight will take centre stage on Saturday, when FNB Women Super League (WSL) champions FC Ongos take on fellow title challenger Beauties FC in the title race. Kick-off is set for 09H00.
This match was called off twice last year due to various reasons, but is now finally set to go ahead. It is well documented that the two rivals do not “sit well at the same fire” when it comes to the field of play, although off the field, the picture is different. This will be no different when the two meet at the Namibia Football Association (NFA) Technical Centre in the capital to see who will have the upper hand at the end of the game.
At this point, Beauties FC heads into the match as favourites based on the number of points they have, with 22 points from eight matches played, and are also unbeaten. Their defence has been a rock, with only one goal let in, the same number of goals let in by second-placed team African Stars Queens, who also have 22 points from nine matches.
FC Ongos, who have been a dominant force in the local game, are yet to hit top gear as they find themselves in third position with 20 points, while their defence is so far the third best behind Beauties and Queens, having let in four goals.
Some of the key players for Beauties that can help the team beat FC Ongos are their three international players: goalkeeper Melissa ‘Slim Kat’ Matheus, midfielder Millicent ‘The General’ Hikuam, and striker Fiola ‘Haaland’ Vliete. Beauties are being coached by former Brave Gladiators great, Salome Iyambo.
On the other hand, FC Ongos have all the tools needed to win the match as they boast a squad that has lots of international players, including the two foreign players from Botswana, goalkeeper Lesego Moeng and midfielder Boitumelo Gammu, while top international players such as Lovisa Mulunga, Lydiana Nanamus, Ivonne Kooper, Anna-Marie Shikusho, Memory Ngonda, just a few to mention, could end Beauties’ title hopes with a win, even though we are still early in the campaign. FC Ongos are being coached by Shama Gure, who has won the league title in the past two seasons.
Other matches slated for the weekend will see Queens welcoming Windhoek City in Oshakati, UNAM Bokkies taking on struggling Namib Daughters, Julinho Athletic having a date with V-Power Angels, and Arrows Ladies awaiting Okahandja FC (all matches on Saturday).
On Sunday, Beauties will have another tough encounter against Khomas NamPol at the NFA Technical Center at 11H00, before FC Ongos takes on Okahandja also at the NFA Technical Center at 14H00.
