Gariseb and Kanchana Qualify for Nike Outdoor Nationals in USA

Two promising Namibian sprinters, Brendan Kanchana and Engelhardt Gariseb, have qualified for the prestigious Nike Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Oregon, USA, from June 19 to 21. This event, a pinnacle of youth track and field competition, attracts nearly 5,000 athletes vying for national championships and potential World Championship berths.
Despite qualifying, both athletes are seeking financial assistance from corporate sponsors or individuals to fund their trip.
Brendan Kanchana (17) is known for his perseverance and talent in the 110m hurdles. Despite facing challenges, including injuries, Kanchana achieved personal bests at zonal and national competitions last year, winning silver medals at the national championship and the Youth Games.
“My long term is to one day represent the country at major competitions such as the Olympic Games, World Championship, All-Africa Games, Commonwealth Games and many others. Athletics has changed my life a lot and it is because of athletics that I am able to see the world. I am going to the USA to go win and not just to compete. I have to give credit to my coach for always pushing me to work hard,” said Kanchana.
His coach, Richard A.R. Pollmann, has developed Kanchana into a formidable competitor. Kanchana’s participation in the Nike Outdoor Nationals is a significant step towards achieving his goals.
Engelhardt Gariseb (18), a renowned 200m sprinter, has competed in the USA previously. He holds the national 200m record with an impressive time of 20.96 seconds and has secured gold medals at The Southern African Christian Schools Sport Association (SACCSA) events.
“My aim is to become one of the fastest sprinters in the World, inspiring young athletes across the continent with his achievements. I am heading to the U.S.A to go compete against the best athletes. I will go and do my level best as I have always done,” said Gariseb.
Like Kanchana, Gariseb is coached by Pollmann. “Watching these two athletes grow from raw talent into world-class competitors has been an incredible journey. Their dedication, resilience, and passion for their sport are qualities that inspire not just me, but everyone around them. As a coach I am deeply grateful for any support that can help them continue to chase their dreams and inspire a new generation of athletes,” said Pollmann.
Kanchana and Gariseb, who belong to the Athletics Development Club in Grootfontein, Otjozondjupa Region, are poised to showcase their talents on the global stage.
“Supporting Brendan and Engelhardt is not just an investment in their future but also a powerful statement of belief in the potential of young athletes to inspire greatness. Their journey to America is a testament to their dedication and perseverance, serving as a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes worldwide,” Pollmann added.
