Kuisebmond Stadium renovations to be completed in April

Renovation work on the Kuisebmund stadium, home of premier league giants Blue Waters, will be completed in April, the Walvis Bay Municipality’s acting manager for public relations and customer service, Anita Kaihiva has The renovations, which will cost the Walvis Bay municipality N$3 million started in November last year and will be undertaken by contractor Element Consulting Engineers.
According to Kaihiva, the renovations are an investment into the community.
“The renovations are at an advanced stage and they started last year well in to November and December as well and we are hoping that they will reach conclusion end of April if there are no complications.”
“The renovations will cost the Walvis Bay Municipality N$3 million. We look at this as an investment in our community because sports development is a very crucial part for the development of any city.”
“Sports development and the cultivation of social activity is a place engagement for our community as well as social events that take place there,” she said.
Kaihiva added that most of the renovations are to ensure that the structural integrity of the pavilion is intact.
“After we did an assessment last year, we found the structural integrity of the pavilion was compromised.”
“That is mainly why we want to attend to the safety integrity of the stadium and to make sure that it is intact,” she noted.
Key areas of the renovations include reinforcing three of the main stadiums frames to enhance structural stability. Six front columns and two side columns, which have experienced varying degrees of deterioration, will also be reinforced to meet required standards.
Apart from the roof slabs, all hand railings will also be replaced with high-quality Grade 316 stainless steel, offering both safety and longevity
The Walvis Bay Municipality foresees undertaking further renovations to the stadium when the need arises.
“The renovations are being done in one phase, but hopefully we will have future additions to enhance and elevate the standard of the entire stadium, but those plans are well and far into the future,” said Kaihiva.
The Kuisebmond Stadium is crucial for the hosting of a number of sports events in Walvis Bay.
Namibia currently lacks stadiums that meet international standards causing the national team to play their home matches in neighbouring South Africa. This prevents the country from generating spin-offs into different sectors through sports tourism.
Because of its strategic location, the stadium offers Namibia the chance to host both regional and international events.
“The upgrading the stadium puts us in a very good position to host future events and also to develop our local sports athletes, especially the youth.”
“They get to really use the stadium to practice and to prepare themselves for events whether they are happening in Walvis Bay or outside of Walvis Bay.”
The Walvis Bay Municipality implored users of the stadium to use the facility well once it is completed and to refrain from vandalising it.
