Namibia’s mobile teleocmunication company, MTC, officially rolled out its inbound Electronic Subscriber Identity Module (eSIM) service, marking a major step forward in the country’s digitalization journey.
Previously, MTC only provided outbound eSIM services for customers travelling abroad. With the introduction of inbound eSIM, local users with eSIM-capable devices will now also enjoy the benefits of digital connectivity.
An eSIM allows users to activate mobile services remotely, switch between networks with ease and manage multiple profiles on a single device. Beyond convenience, the innovation reduces reliance on plastic SIM cards, supporting environmental sustainability. For tourists and business travelers, the service promises instant access to local networks boosting both confidence in Namibia’s telecom infrastructure and economic activity.
Information and Communication Techonology Minister, Emma Theofelus said the service represents a turning point for digital inclusion. 
“Adopting eSIM technology places Namibia on the path to universal, secure and seamless connectivity. This innovation will accelerate access to mobile services and serve as a springboard for innovation in areas such as IoT, smart agriculture, e-commerce, mobile banking and healthcare,” Theofelus said. However, the minister also cautioned that challenges remain, particularly around device compatibility and consumer awareness. 
“Not all mobile devices support eSIM, which could limit adoption. Furthermore, most citizens are unfamiliar with its benefits. I urge operators to prioritize customer education and ensure inclusivity for all members of society,” she highlighted.
MTC managing director, Dr. Licky Erastus, emphasized that the company is committed to shaping Namibia’s digital future.  “Namibia is not just adopting global trends but shaping them. With this launch, we are advancing our clients into a new era of connectivity.
