Junior hockey teams set for Zimbabwe Series

The country’s U-13, U-16 and U-18 boys and girls have been hard at training ahead of the Junior Hockey Series scheduled for 8-11 August in Zimbabwe.

Currently, 36 players of the U-13 that were selected last year at the Standard Bank Junior Hockey initiative arrived in Windhoek this week to attend a week-long training camp that started on Monday, 17 June, at the Windhoek Gymnasium artificial turf in the capital.

Equally, the U-16 and U-18 boys and girls will also be competing against host Zimbabwe and Zambia at the same competition, with the two teams already busy with their trials before the final teams are selected over the weekend.

Hockey has become one of the fastest growing sports codes in the country in the last few years, and it is no surprise to see the senior national team becoming a regular participant at the international hockey World Cup, while the same breath, the senior national teams are doing wonders on the continent, with the senior men team recently crowned as the best team on the continent after winning the Africa Cup in Swakopmund few weeks ago, while the female team which has been a dominant force on the continent could only finish second behind eventual winners South Africa.

In the meantime, the famous Standard Bank Junior Hockey Initiative will continue with its league matches in all 16 teams currently playing under this banner. In contrast, the league is set to be expanded in new areas, such as in Swakopmund and Khorixas, in July.

The 2024 National Festival is scheduled for 02 November 2024 at the Windhoek High School Turf in Windhoek.

The U-13 teams are camping at Ella du Plessis Secondary School, while their training is at Windhoek Gymnasium Private School, ahead of their trip to Zimbabwe while waiting for their seniors to finalise with their squads.
