Kaapstad proves age is just a number

REHOBOTH born-jockey, Hatlieg Swartbooi was the overall winner of this year’s Standard Bank Alex Angermund Handicup racing event that was held at the Okahandja Turf Club on October22.

Swartbooi rode on Kaapstad, the winning horse which was also the oldest horse in the main event with nine-years, followed by Stoute Man in second place, while third place went to Unbroken Promises while fourth place went to Days of Thunder.

Speaking to Confidente after the win, an excited looking Swartbooi said he did not expect to win as he was considered an outsider with lower stakes on his horse due to its age.

“It was not an easy ride, as I was not expecting to win with this horse as it was new to me.  If you are to ask me how I am feeling right now, I can say that I am over the moon. For now  I am now looking forward to the next race in Gobabis,” Swartbooi said.

The event was organised by Alex Angermund Racing Club from Rehoboth through Standard Bank who have been sponsoring the event for the past seven years.

For winning the Standard Bank Alex Angermund Handicap, Swartbooi took home N$5 000 plus a trophy, while second place position took home N$3000, third place went home with a N$2000 and fourth place received N$1000.

Standard Bank Namibia’s Okahandja branch manager, Immanuel Jason said that the bank was happy to be associated with the Alex Angermund Racing Club.

Standard Bank Namibia gave a sponsorship amounting to N$70 000 towards the event.

“This was the seventh edition and I am very much happy that Standard Bank has been walking in this journey with Alex Angermund Rcaing Club. We are now looking forward to the future,” Jason said.
