Kambindu eyes World Cup appearance

By Michael Uugwanga

BRAVE Warriors striker Elmo Kambindu believes that the national team has what it takes to upset the likes of Senegal, Togo and Congo-Brazzaville and qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup that will be staged in Qatar.

The Brave Warriors are in group H alongside the three African powerhouses in the World Cup  qualifiers, with Namibia being the dark horse of the grouping.

According to Kambindu who now plays professional club football in Mozambique for Costa do Sol in the Mocambola league which is Mozambique’s top flight football league, Namibia can qualify to the World Cup if the players show ‘some hunger’.

“It is every player’s dream to play at the World Cup because it is the biggest football tournament in the world.

I am looking forward to playing in the World Cup qualifiers if called up. We can qualify for the World Cup if we have the hunger and determination.

We just have to fight and have that belief of qualifying,” he told Confidente Sport.

The Brave Warriors will have to play their 2022 World Cup qualifier matches outside Namibia after the Sam Nujoma Stadium was declared unfit to host international matches while Independence  Stadium is in a dilapidated state, therefore also ruled not fit to hold matches.

The Brave Warriors’ first World Cup home match is scheduled at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa against Congo-Brazzaville on September 1, before they face Togo away on September 5.

The team will be away in Senegal on October 6 before the return leg on October 10. The other matches will be against Congo-Brazzaville before they conclude with their final group H match against Togo.

Kambindu has so far played three matches for his new club since his signing last month from Mighty Gunners of Otjiwarongo, and has scored four goals for the Brave Warriors since making debut for the national team in 2019.

Kambindu who is still in search for his first goal at the new club will have a chance to do so when his side takes on ENH Vilankulo on August 21.

“So far I have only had two assists.  I am looking forward to scoring goals and that is one of the reasons why I am here. Our aim for now since I only joined the team with only few games to go, is to try and finish as high as possible on the table”.
