ROOTS Namibia, the first apple-producing, privately-owned company in the country is determined to produce enough apples in the next five years that will be sufficient enough to supply the entire country and stop the importation of apples from South Africa.

This was revealed by Roots Namibia Farm Manager, Jano Riecket while speaking to a group of local journalists who were touring Namibia’s Southern Kalahari route on a trip organised by Namibia Tourism Board (NTB).

The trip was aimed at increasing the country’s tourism visibility and encourage Namibians to practice local tourism by touring and visiting different places in the country.

Roots, Namibia’s first commercial apple orchard is situated at Stampriet, 60 kilometers northeast of Mariental and has big plans aimed at addressing food security and train aspiring farmers through its three pillars, Food Security, Education and Manufacturing.

Riecket, said the idea of starting the commercial apple orchard was to address food security in the country and fill local supermarkets with locally produced apples that Namibians can be proud of which will see the country stop importing apples from South Africa, which in turn will benefit Namibia with job creation and add value to the country’s economy.

“Roots Namibia has three pillars that we believe can change the country, namely Food Security, Education and Manufacturing.

The idea of producing apples indicates that Namibia can be food sustainable, given the expertise and knowledge.

We will not have to import 80 percent of apples from South Africa anymore,” Riecket said.

He said the company was established in 2015 and has so far invested more than N$ 100 million on the project by putting up infrastructures.
