Matheus siblings become first brother and sister to represent Namibia

• By Michael Uugwanga

THE Matheus siblings, Jonas and Melissa, like most siblings, had their share of rivalries growing up in Otavi. Still, they have just made history, becoming the first Namibian siblings to play for Namibia and are living the dream.

Jonas, who plays club football for Ongos FC in the Debmarine Premiership, having joined the team this season from local team Orlando Pirates, is also a Brave Warriors player. In contrast, Melissa, the Brave Gladiators’ first-choice goalkeeper, plays club football for Beauties Ladies in the FNB Women Super League (WSL) after leaving Ongos FC Ladies when it was Tura Magic last season.

At club level, both of their respective clubs are vying for silverware, with Jonas’ Ongos FC third on the log with 39 points, two points behind table-topping Khomas NamPol in the Debmarine Premiership title race, and Beauties third in the FNB WSL, six points behind Ongos FC Ladies.  Internationally, Jonas is now the fourth-choice goalkeeper for the Brave Warriors, behind first-choice Lloyd Kazapua, Kamaijanda Ndisiro, and Edward Maova, while Melissa remains unrivalled in the women’s game.
