ARGUABLY the best and most famous female football referee the country has ever produced, Twanyanyukwa ‘Di Maria’ Antsino continues to fly the country’s flag high, both regionally and continentally, despite taking up the job in 2019.

Antsino has followed in the footsteps of former great Queen Manga, who is one of the country’s most decorated football referees.

This week, Confidente Sport sat down with Antsino ahead of her biggest test in her refereeing career when she will be officiating
the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations Qualifiers match between Eswatini and Zimbabwe on October 26.

Born and raised atOmunkete village in Oshikuku district, the 29-year-old said she is inspired by top female referee Letticia Antonella Viana of Eswatini.

“I was a former national team player for the Brave Gladiators between 2015 to 2019.

I played club football at V-Power Angels in the Namibia Football Association (NFA) Women Super League.

“My next mission will be the Africa Women Cup of Nations Qualifiers match between Eswatini and Zimbabwe which will be the biggest match that I will be officiating, because we all know that the World Cup is always the biggest stage.

“I thought being a referee is just a hobby, but after completing my Confederation of African Football (CAF) licence and officiating at big tournaments/games, I realised that being a referee is an underrated career, however if you think outside the box you will realise that refereeing can be a career. I have already officiated some big matches before, notably the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Women’s Championship final between Tanzania and Malawi on 09 October 2021,” she said.

The year 2021 will go down as Antsino’s best moment in her refereeing career thanks to her hard work that continues to pay off, as a result she is nominated in the category of Umpire/Referee of the Year at the upcoming Namibia Sports Awards (NASA) scheduled for October 30.

Antsino is up against veteran boxing referee and radio presenter Lazarus Nainda for the award.

“It is my first time to be nominated and I’m happy that my work is recognised nationally. Being nominated is a win for me,” she said.
