MOBILE Telecommunications Limited (MTC) has sponsored Miss Namibia Chelsi Shikongo with an amount of N$100 000, N$2 000 worth of airtime and an IPhone 12.

Speaking at the donation event, MTC human capital chief and corporate affairs officer Tim Ekandjo said the funds will enable Shikongo to participate in the Miss Universe 2021 which will take place in December in Israel.

“There is something about the MTC brand celebrating Namibian talent and when we send off people from this office, usually miracles happen. The funds will enable her to register for the pageant … it is an expensive process, there is a lot of costs involved,” he said.

Ekandjo went on to congratulate Shikongo encouraging her to go out there and leave footprints on an international stage while putting Namibia on the map.

“We invited her here to give her blessings or the nation’s blessings. We have over 2.6 million dedicated customers and on behalf of them we would want to say congratulations.

Not all of us could attend but we have been following the success and our view is that it is not going to end at just Miss Namibia title,” he further highlighted.

He emphasised the importance of companies supporting local talent saying it is a way of building capacity. Ekandjo said, “We want you to take the entire Namibia through the 1992 experience where we celebrated Miss Universe, go there and make history, not for the MTC brand but for the Namibian brand, on behalf of everyone, we say, go out there and make us proud.”

Expressing gratitude, Shikongo said she is excited to be taking part in Miss Universe saying that it is the right platform for her.

“Thank you MTC for allowing me to take part in Miss Universe, it is a big platform and a once off opportunity.  I am so thankful for the generous gift. To all Namibians who supported me, thank you. I am happy to be representing Namibia on an international stage,” she added.

Miss Namibia still requires an additional N$50 000 to be able to take part in Miss Universe.
