MTC grants 90 days grace period to reactivate numbers

Over 500,000 unregistered SIM cards have been deactivated after the Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) registration process ended on March 31.

The SIM card registration period ended last month, after an extension from the original deadline of December 31, 2023, and up to 514 834 Mobile Telecommunication Company (MTC) and 191 598 Telecom Namibia numbers were deactivated.

In all, 514 834 SIM cards were suspended, while 1 864 705 cards (MTC1 613 8930 and Telecom 250 812) were registered.

Following the registration period, Tim Ekandjo, MTC’s Chief Human Capital, Corporate Affairs, and Marketing Officer, stated that suspended SIM card users have a 90-day ‘grace time’ from April 1 to July 1 to reactivate their numbers.

According to Ekandjo, the required Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) registration operation successfully registered 1 613 893 consumers, while 323 236 clients’ mobile numbers were suspended.

This corresponds to an 83.3 per cent registration rate.
