Namibian Films Scoop AMVCA Nominations

Producers of Skeleton Coast

Three of Namibia’s cinematically acclaimed productions have garnered a combined 10 nominations at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, which recognizes outstanding performances in television, film, entertainment, and, recently, digital content creation throughout Nollywood.

“Skeleton Coast” bagged a whopping eight nominations in the Best Director, Supporting Actress, Lead Actor, Movie Writing, Editing, Score/Music, Cinematography, and Movie categories, while “Lukas” and “Walvis Tale” were nominated in the Best Indigenous Language (Southern Africa) and Best Documentary categories, respectively.

Additionally, “Mwananga” and “Rivals in Time,” two productions that include Namibian scriptwriter Elisabeth Hamukwaya and camera assistant Sandra Muramba, also received nominations in the Best MultiChoice Talent Factory category. These two productions were created by the 2024 MultiChoice Talent Factory alumni from Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana, Malawi, and Angola.

“Skeleton Coast,” which was shot along Namibia’s self-titled coastline, features local actress Tjuna Daringo and is about a group of Black scientists who arrive on the Skeleton Coast in search of a newly discovered gem, only to begin discovering dead bodies during the expedition.

“Walvis Tale” passionately narrates the journeys of a few Walvis Bay residents who showcase their love for fish and what the commodity means to their livelihoods. While the script of “Lukas” is based on testimonies from 23 children and young adults living or having lived on the streets of Windhoek, the story of Lukas, played by award-winning Alejandro Cooper, is fictional.
