Namibia’s transition to green hydrogen and renewable energy

Nayore member Esther Ananias stated that the government is searching for sustainability due to the severe climate change issues the nation faces. According to Ananias, these projects ensure access to sustainable energy, create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and reduce carbon emissions.

Sustainable farming practices help preserve ecosystems and biodiversity, promoting overall sustainable development. However, these efforts support global sustainable development goals and aim for a robust and resilient future. “Namibia has always had a tough climate, but lately, droughts have become more severe. Much of the country is dry, with unpredictable and insufficient rainfall,” said Ananias.

She further cited that this state is hardest on farmers, leading to failed crops and lost livestock. Rural communities relying on farming face food shortages.  Moreover, the government has declared many drought emergencies in recent years, seeking help from within the country and abroad.

Ananias added that people’s lives are badly affected as women and their children travel distances to get water.  “The impact on people is severe. Water shortages affect agriculture, health, and daily life. Rural women and children often walk long distances to find water, disrupting education and economic activities.

This cycle of poverty highlights the urgent need for sustainable solutions,” added Ananias. Furthermore, Namibia is taking steps to deal with climate change.  Key actions include building dams and water recycling facilities, promoting water-saving techniques, and developing drought-resistant crops.

Educating communities and providing resources for sustainable farming and alternative livelihoods are essential.  Strong climate policies and their implementation are crucial, as well as integrating climate adaptation into national plans and securing funds for resilience projects. Renewable energy offers hope. Namibia has abundant solar and wind resources to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help combat climate change.

The country’s proactive approach, including green hydrogen and renewable energy, also shows a commitment to a resilient future.  By integrating these initiatives into national strategies, Namibia addresses immediate concerns and sets an example for other countries facing similar issues.
