Inmates urinate in bottles

By Hertta-Maria Amutenja

ACCORDING to a man who was detained by the police for contravening Covid-19 regulations last month, inmates were allegedly kept in a cell that had no toilet and were forced to urinate in bottles or in an open area at the Windhoek Central Police Station.
“We were kept in some holding cell that had no toilet at all and it was terribly filthy. If you see in the pictures there are bottles in which some inmates were peeing in. When we asked to use the toilet they refused us and we had to pee in the yard. I can’t remember the officer’s name but we were denied access to the bathroom and sometimes even told to use buckets in the cells,” said the man on condition of anonymity.
