NFA explains team absence at Cosafa

By Michael Uugwanga

FOLLOWING its decision not to send a women’s team to the Council of Southern Africa Football Association (Cosafa) cup competition to be staged in South Africa, the Namibian Football Association (NFA) has said that the players are not ready for a regional competition.

Cosafa is set to host three women football competitions, firstly the Under-15 age category, with the initial stages on the weekend of November 7-8, and the final to be played as a curtain raiser to the Cosafa Women’s Under-17 Championship from November 5 to November 13, while the senior Cosafa women’s cup is also slated on the same day as that of the junior competition.

The annual regional showpiece is now set to take place in Nelson Mandela Bay after it was postponed twice due to the coronavirus outbreak, before the South African government decided to give a go ahead for the competition to take place.

Despite the NFA being a regular participant at the Cosafa Cup, at all levels for both men and women, NFA acting secretary general Franco Cosmos said that the women football is not yet ready to take part in the competition.

“We are not sending because we are not prepared.

The women desk’s has indicated that themselves,” he said Cosmos.

There have been seven previous Cosafa Women’s Championships since the first one played in 2002, each providing excitement and showcasing the quality of the talent in the southern African region.

The news by the NFA not to send a Namibian team to the Cosafa tournament has received criticism on social media.

“Why is the team locked out of the competitions? Is it because it’s a ladies team and not a men’s team? It’s so disappointing that our football associations are hurting women football. It started at Confederation of African Football (CAF), of all continental competitions only the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2020 was cancelled,” said a disappointed James Ahela Abong’o on the Women Football Development-Namibia Facebook page.

Meanwhile, Jackie Gertze, head of the NFA Women’s Desk said that the players had been looking forward to playing in the competition ever since Cosafa made the announcement.

“The girls were excited and looking forward to the Cosafa Cup.

The absence means lack of income for the players and less opportunities for the players to play in competitions.

“Namibia has one, if not, the best women infrastructure on the continent unlike in most countries, meaning that from the women’s desk we are really doing well in the uplifting of women football,” said Gertze.
