Kauta confident of more clubs joining

NAMIBIA Premier League (NPL) chairperson Patrick Kauta is confident that more clubs will join the NPL as a sports body once its membership application is approved by the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC), following its expulsion by the Namibia Football Association (NFA) last month.

The NPL was expelled by the Namibia Football Association (NFA) on July 18 as a member for bringing the association into disrepute.

According to Kauta, once the NPL is registered as a sports body it will comprise of two leagues, the premier division and the first division.

He also said that finding a sponsor for the two leagues would not be a problem.

Last month, former long time sponsor of the NPL, MTC said that it will give the NPL till September to start with its league, while at the same time the NFA is also set to have its own football league and according to some media reports the NFA has already claimed that it has secured funding for its leagues including that of women football.

“Yes, we are still going to go ahead with the plan to form the league.

We do have the clubs and we are just waiting for the NSC approval. Do not worry about the sponsor as we are waiting first for a licence from the commission. We have support from Black Africa, Young Brazilians, Okahandja United, Life Fighters, UNAM, Blue Waters, African Stars and others.

“We are going to have two leagues, the premier league and the first division.

In the premier league we are looking at 12 clubs, while the first division will be determined by the number of clubs,” said Kauta.

Chairperson of NSC, Joel Matheus has said that the commission cannot pronounce itself at this stage regarding the NPL’s application.

“I cannot comment at this stage until a final decision is made,” he said.

The NFA on the other hand says 10 clubs applied for membership with the association before the deadline that lapsed on August 23.

The association’s acting secretary-general Franco Cosmos could however not determine the number of clubs that will form the top flight league.

Football in Namibia is unlikely to start this year due to continuing squabbles within the fraternity, and the Covid-19 infections that continue to rise countrywide.

The last time domestic football had a run was during the 2018/2019 soccer season of which Black Africa won the MTC/NPL title, while Civics and Orlando Pirates were relegated after finishing in the bottom places, while Young African was demoted to the first division.

However, Young African’s expulsion was overturned last month by the NFA’s appeals committee with a fine of N$100 000 after it found that the NPL disciplinary committee did not honour a plea agreement with the club.
