Ongos Ladies end year top, Vliete scores her 58 goals in a calendar year

DEFENDING champions of the FNB Women Super League (WSL) Ongos Ladies, previously known as Tura Magic, have ended the year in style by collecting six points over the past weekend to end the year with 12 points.

Ongo’s ladies brushed aside Ongwediva Queens 5-1 on Saturday before defeating Ramblers 4-1 on Sunday, which saw them topping the log with 12 points from four matches, which is also a 100 per cent record.

However, they will have to play their next match without one of their key players, midfielder Memory Ngonda, who was red-carded.

Ongos Ladies won the title last season under the name Tura Magic before it was changed to Ongos a few months ago after it was purchased by new owners Ongos Valley, who also own the men’s team in the Debmarine Premiership.

On Saturday, against Ongwediva Queens, Ongos struggled in the first 35 minutes of opening. Queens were all in the faces of tired-looking Ongos players who had most of their players back from international duty not long ago. However, they were lucky that Queens did not capitalise on their chances.

Ongos were also without some of their key players due to injuries and work commitment, notably Yvonne Kooper (attacker), Lydiana Nanamus (central defence) and Anna-Marie Shikusho (striker).

On Sunday against Ramblers, it was a more comfortable display from Ongos, who last season needed a miracle to beat Ramblers at the same stadium when they emerged with a 3-2 victorious. Beauties FC striker Fiola ‘Haaland’ Vliete added another goal in the calendar year in her team’s 5-1 win over relegation-threatened Okahandja Beauties in Okahandja after scoring one goal to end the calendar year with 58 goals after scoring the 57 league goals in the league last season, a record that still stands.
