Oshikoto N$1m Govt building lie idle

In another classic example of taxpayers’ money going to waste, a government building that cost nearly N$1 million has become a white elephant.

The building, built in 2010, is at Uutumbe village in the Olukonda constituency of the Oshikoto region.

According to documents that Confidente has seen, the building was constructed to serve as an income-generation project for women in the village who used to weave baskets and other products. These women allegedly displayed their products in the open, and as a result, they suffered from the elements.

Through the urban and rural development ministry, the government allegedly consulted the community and requested them to submit their needs, which resulted in the construction of the site, which would serve as a project operational site for them.

The building’s total cost was N$942,631.77. Sources told Confidente that the Oshikoto Regional Council (ORC) implemented it and served as its custodian.
