Psychologist Robert Whittaker says violence in the country has been normalised and Namibia remains a violent country, this as the Namibian Police this week revealed to Confidente that 584 people including 49 juveniles and 121 women were murdered in the last 21 months.

According to statistics provided to Confidente by the Inspector General of the Namibian police, Joseph Shikongo, murders in the male category recorded the highest number with 414 cases. The regions with the highest number of cases are Khomas, Omaheke and Omusati.

According to the report, most of the victims including children were killed by firearms, other weapons such as knives and axes.

Namibian Police Spokesperson Deputy Commissioner, Kauna Shikwambi urged members of the public to avoid carrying dangerous weapons to public places like bars.

“Most of the murder cases happens at shabeens or at the drinking places whereby people carry firearm, knifes and other dangerous weapons.

These cases mostly occur after an argument and people end up using dangerous weapons.

People must learn to handle issues and avoid arguments with each other because murder cases are on the increase.

“Most of the people that commit these crimes are sometimes under the influence of alcohol that is why l am saying when you are going to public places like shabeens and clubs, you must avoid carrying your weapon, if you argue with someone you will end up using that weapon and you will commit a crime that you will regret for the rest of your life,” she said.
