Over 500 retrenched in 2 months

NAMIBIA’S labour and employment sector is in an economic downturn due to Covid-19 and more than 500 employees were retrenched between April and June countrywide.

This is according to data released by the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation acting executive director Lydia Indombo.

The hospitality sector, which last year experienced a plethora of retrenchments let go of 103 jobs. The transport and logistics sector retrenched 29 jobs, manufacturing 47, agriculture 82 and security 34.

The retail and wholesale sector retrenched a combined 190 employees in a period of two months.

Other sectors that were not specified, retrenched 144 workers.
