Alcohol hindering Covid fight – police

By Marx Itamalo

POLICE in the North say the sale of alcohol is hampering the fight against the deadly Covid-19 virus as people are reluctant to adhere to the set regulations. This is according to several regional police spokespersons that Confidente spoke to this week.

According to the police, despite it being clearly stipulated in the recently introduced Covid- 19 regulations that alcohol outlets such as bars and shebeens should open at 09h00 and close at 18h00 from Mondays to Saturdays, some of these establishments are still operating up to midnight.

Furthermore, the police say, patrons still gather and drink at bars instead of taking their drinks home. Some people still open their bars on Sundays, although it is prohibited, the police say.
