Prolonged strike exposes need for Strike Funds

… as NBC staff victory seems elusive

WITH the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) having already stated that it will apply the ‘no work, no pay’ legislation as per the Labour Act, chances are that employees at the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) will go with no remuneration this month – if legal moves spearheaded by the trade union fail to yield positive results.
The above precarious situation is now exposing the need for trade unions to establish strike funds.

Strike funds are special reserves set up by unions ahead of time – through special assessments or from general funds – and used to provide strike pay.

The latter is a payment made by a trade union to workers who are on strike to help in meeting their basic needs while on strike.
