IT is over a year since the City of Windhoek and the Spanish Embassy in Namibia discussed a collaboration between the Real Madrid Foundation, the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service (MSYNS) and the City of Windhoek, which will see a foundation being established to help develop various sport codes for Windhoek based schools.

The discussions were made when former Windhoek Mayor, Job Amupanda made a courtesy call on the former Spanish ambassador to Namibia, Antonio Javier Romera Pintor on September 10 2021, where Amupanda requested Real Madrid Football Club’s support for the Windhoek school-based sports level.

Real Madrid is one of the world’s most famous and most successful football club and are expected to set up a foundation in the capital that will help develop sport in Windhoek.

Lydia Amutenya, Corporate Communications section head at City of Windhoek said that despite the city not having received further development regarding the initiative they were optimistic the foundation would become a reality.

“The City participated in a meeting convened by the Embassy on the September 10, 2021, to discuss technical details of a possible collaboration between the Real Madrid Foundation, the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service. It was expected that the Ministry would convene subsequent meetings, however, the City did not receive any further invitations. We remain desirous to seeing this mayoral development initiative become a reality and look forward to working with the leading Ministry, relevant sports authorities and schools,” Amutenya said.

Amutenya further stated that the initiative is currently in the hands of the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service, after saying that the City of Windhoek was ready to provide sports fields for the initiative to takeoff.

“Subsequent to the Mayoral announcement the initiative was taken over by the sports authorities, specifically the Ministry of Sports Youth and National Service for co-ordination. The leading Ministry will therefore be better placed to provide an update on this initiative. The Ministry would guide on the best method of school identification and sports codes. The City will play a complementary role, such as the provision of sports fields,” Amutenya further said.
