Semenya wins, but World Athletics ruling remains: Botha

• By Michael Uugwanga

RENOWNED international coach, Henk Botha says Caster Semenya’s victory and the European Court of Human Rights’ finding that World Athletics had discriminated against her, World Athletics’ decision on transgender women and athletes with differences of sexual development (DSD) still stands.

World Athletics, in March of this year, prohibited transgender women and athletes with DSD from competing in elite track and field competitions, effective March 31, unless they lower their high testosterone.

The ban also affected local sprinters Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi.

Semenya was prohibited from competing in competitions organised by World Athletics unless she lowered her high testosterone.

On Tuesday, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that World Athletics had discriminated against Semenya.

Meanwhile, Mboma, for the next six months, will be taking medications to suppress her testosterone before she can compete in paid events.
