…..as controversial Combating of Rape Amendment bill attracts criticism

Pundits and activists against gender based violence have warned that statutory rape or child rape will be considered a lessor crime if the Combating of Rape Amendment Bill is passed into law in its current form.

The long drawn out Combating of Rape Amendment Bill which is likely to be passed in parliament on Thursday after the National Assembly failed to form a quorum on Wednesday has received mixed reception from Gender Based Violence experts and political pundits alike.

The main point of contention amongst members of civil society that have studied the Bill is that all forms of rape except for the rape of a minor carry direct prison sentences.
