Shanghala’s assistant denied bail again

AN employee of former justice minister Sacky Shanghala and his business partner James Hatuikulipi suffered another legal setback when the Windhoek High Court dismissed his bail application on Monday. Judge Christie Liebenberg ruled that Nigel van Wyk did not satisfy the court’s requirements to be released on bail pending his trial.

Van Wyk together with Shanghala is charged with defeating or obstructing the course of justice when he was allegedly caught destroying potential evidence from Shanghala’s residence in Windhoek.

The prosecution alleges that the material he removed could be evidence in the ongoing investigations of the fishing quotas corruption case, dubbed Fishrot. Van Wyk has been in custody since December 2019.
